Better than a Hallelujah by Amy Grant

God loves a lullaby
In a mothers tears in the dead of night
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.
God loves a drunkards cry,
A soldiers plea not to let him die
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
But honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah.

Woman holding on for life,
A dying man giving up the fight
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes
Tears of shame for whats been done,
A silence when the words wont come
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

Better than a church bell ringing,
Better than a choir singing loud, singing out.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
But honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah.

  1. The thing that confuses me the most about this song... If I were God (Which I am not): I would prefer my children to come to me by choice rather than by desperation (them feeling that they had no other option)...

  2. Thanks for your comment Zoe. This scripture came to my mind from Psalm 51, a psalm of repentance where David says "Going through the motions doesn't please you, a flawless performance is nothing to you. I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don't for a moment escape God's notice." I think that many times our "hallelujahs" become routine to us and before God. But when we are in a place of desperation that's when we can truly experience true praise to God. It pleases him when we come to him with a "broken and contrite spirit" ... the "honest cry of a broken heart" as the song says. I think when we are in that place, we often think that God doesn't want to hear from us, but the song says that that's when he hears a beautiful melody. Again, thanks for your thoughts, it made me reflect a little more on the words of this song.
